Prices start from £130 (Cost is fully inclusive of motorcycle hire and safety wear.)

This course is designed for anyone who wishes to take up motorcycling. The CBT is important as it can make further training very easy or very difficult. As with all new skill sets that you will ever learn, the basics allow you to develop good or not so good skills for future riding. If the basics are done correctly (and with us they are) then motorcycling will change your life forever. Here are a few things you need to know about CBT:

Element A

Involves a discussion on the aims of the CBT, helmets and clothing that’s recommended.

Element B

Is where we take you through the bike and its controls. All trainees are taught how to operate both stands, start and stop the engine, basic machine maintenance, pushing the motorcycle and bringing the bike to a complete stop.

Element C

Is the part where the riding begins. At Horizon we benefit from the National Bowl concert arena and in this area you will learn all the basic aspects of riding. We will make sure you’re riding to a good standard before moving on.

Element D

Involves a pre-road safety brief before heading onto the roads. In this we will cover a variety of topics like hazards, roundabouts, following distances etc.

Element E

Is a ride on the public roads for at least two hours. We want to ride in as many different conditions as possible. Your confidence in this section should increase as time goes on. All we ask is that your control be at a good standard and you ride with yours and other road users’ safety in mind at all times.

CBT is not a guaranteed pass! Be wary of the standard of training if a school offers a guaranteed pass scheme. For those who have not ridden before it will be challenging, but with the right training the aim is to have a fun day with a new perspective for the roads. For CBT you will need to wear jeans and footwear with some ankle support.

You will also need a driving licence or a provisional licence. We do provide some motorcycle equipment but your own gear is always going to fit and suit you better. Having a basic understanding of the Highway Code is advantageous to those with little riding and road experience. Come and have a fun day with us. Read through the CBT FAQs below to find out more.

CBT FAQs

CBT stands for Compulsory Basic Training.

You can ride a moped without L plates and without taking the full motorcycle test if either: You have a car driving licence and a compulsory basic training (CBT) certificate. You passed your driving test before 1 February 2001. You must complete a CBT course to confirm your full moped licence if you passed your car driving test on or after 1 February 2001. Your CBT certificate for riding mopeds is then valid for as long as your car driving licence. Mopeds have a maximum engine size of 50cc and a maximum speed of approximately 31mph.

C16 for a moped or 17 for a bike up to 125cc.

Prices start from £130 (Cost is fully inclusive of motorcycle hire and safety wear).

The normal start time is 8:30am, but you are advised to be there a little earlier. Your training will be finished no later than 5pm, possibly earlier than this.

Buy a current copy of the Highway Code and read it thoroughly. CBT is quite an intensive day so it is really important to make sure you have had a good night’s rest beforehand as you do need to be fresh and alert on the day. Also ensure you have a valid and in date driving licence and remember to bring it along on the day.

Just you and maybe one other customer will be allocated to your CBT instructor.

CBT will take you at least one full day to complete, depending on how well you progress through the training.

When attending for your course, you will need to bring your UK photocard driving licence with you. If you have a full UK car licence then you should have motorcycle provisional entitlement. If you have an old style paper driving licence issued before the photocard was introduced in 1998, you should bring this with you.

If you have some, or all of your own motorcycle clothing then it’s best to wear that. Otherwise, we can loan you, a helmet, jacket, gloves and waterproof over-trousers. Please note that any loan equipment may not be a perfect fit.

You are advised to wear your own motorcycle trousers & boots, otherwise at least a pair of jeans (dragging jeans are better) or sturdy leg wear of some description. We can loan you some over trousers if the weather turns wet. With footwear, they really want to be sturdy with ankle support, such as light walking boots, but never steel toe-caps. Avoid wearing any form of slip on shoe.

You will be required to read a number plate at a distance of 20.5 metres. If you wear glasses or contact lenses for driving then remember to bring these along with you to your CBT, they must be worn at all times that you are riding.

When you have satisfactorily completed the course you will be given your CBT Certificate (DL196) and this will validate your provisional entitlement on your driving licence. L - Plates must be clearly displayed front and rear of your motorcycle, you must not carry a pillion passenger and riding on motorways is forbidden. The DL196 is valid for two years, after which, either re-take CBT or pass the practical motorcycle tests.
