Riders age 24 or over, or those who reach 24 before their two year restriction ends, have other options.
Direct access
After taking Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) and the theory test, the practical test may be taken on a motorcycle with a power output of at least 35kW. A pass allows you to ride any size of bike. All or part of the CBT course may be taken on either a learner bike or a large bike. To practice for the practical test on bikes larger than the learner bike specification you must:
- be accompanied at all times by an approved instructor on another bike and in radio contact
- wear fluorescent or reflective clothingfollow all other provisional licence restrictions
Accelerated access
Riders who reach the age of 24, while still within the two year period where they are restricted to maximum 25 kW machines, but who wish to ride larger bikes need to pass a further test on a motorcycle of at least 35 kW. They may practice on bikes over 25 kW under the same practice conditions for direct access riders. You will revert to learner status while practicing (on a motorcycle greater than 25 kW) although test failure will not affect your existing licence.
DAS FAQs
DAS stands for Direct Access Scheme.
An intensive course of training on a 650cc motorcycle followed by 2 practical tests.
If you want a full UK unrestricted motorcycle licence then this is the course for you, available with or without CBT.
Then just book a CBT which is the first stage of learning to ride a motorcycle. Once completed you should be ready to move onto DAS.
Prices start from as little as £795 for the 5 day course rising to £895 for the full 6 day course.
The normal start time is 8:30am, but you are advised to be there a little earlier. Your training will be finished generally by 3pm.
Just you and maybe one other customer will be allocated to your instructor.
When attending for your course, you will need to bring your UK photocard driving licence with you. If you have a full UK car licence then you should have motorcycle provisional entitlement. If you have an old style paper driving licence issued before the photocard was introduced in 1998, you should bring this with you.
If you have some, or all of your own motorcycle clothing then it’s best to wear that. Otherwise, we can loan you, a helmet, jacket, gloves and waterproof over-trousers. Please note that any loan equipment may not be a perfect fit.
You are advised to wear your own motorcycle trousers & boots, otherwise at least a pair of jeans (dragging jeans are better) or sturdy leg wear of some description. We can loan you some over trousers if the weather turns wet. With footwear, they really want to be sturdy with ankle support, such as light walking boots, but never steel toe-caps. Avoid wearing any form of slip on shoe.
You will be required to read a number plate at a distance of 20.5 metres. If you wear glasses or contact lenses for driving then remember to bring these along with you to your training and tests. They must be worn at all times that you are riding.
